No amount of whining or whinging (for those of you are britishly inclined) on the internet will stop American TV producers from happily watching what is successful on british television and reproducing it in america. literally hundreds of shows in America are influenced by former versions on BBC alone. HOWEVER, no story has been stolen and reshaped and retold like the story of sherlock holmes. How many shows can you think of that feature an extremely intelligent and observant “champion of law” (in the words of conan doyle) who is socially awkward, uncensored in their deductions of the world around them, joined by a more socialized and occasionally militarily experienced sidekick, and occasionally musically oriented thinker? How many of those shows follow not only their career in law enforcement (whether legitimate or not) as well as their personal lives, noting some sort of tension between the detective and sidekick? In addition to the obvious ones, like Sherlock and House, there is Bones, Psych, Luther, and elements of the story in smaller pieces in just about every crime show in existence, e.g. Castle, CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds etc. My point is this: There is no amount of entertainment that is completely original, the world of performance art (but especially television) is fraught with remixes and re-adaptations, not stealing, but CELEBRATING the work of geniuses past. Stop complaining about sherlock getting another reboot, for all you know, it may be excellent and it’s disgustingly unfair for you to judge and dissent a show that hasn’t even started yet when you love its influencer so much. Arthur Conan Doyle wrote an incredible story and created something so much bigger than the Strand Magazine could have ever anticipated, it deserves to be indulged every inspiration and adaptation that comes from it, and we deserve to be entertained by those adaptations.
